Age is just a number. And while no one can stop us from getting old, this doesn’t mean that we can’t explore different beauty stuff. Of course, this is to look great all the time. Women are very particular when it comes to fashion, which is one thing why men adore us.
Some women are terrified of reaching the age of 50 because obviously, it’s the start of apprehensions about life. May it be about your kids, husband, career, and more. While it’s a fact that women are generally a worrier, it can’t be denied that we all love fashion.
Many beauticians agreed that a woman’s hairstyle is relatively important as it defines her personality and her face. Hairdressers, for example, are very particular when it comes to cutting or styling their client’s hair.
Great hairstyles bring positive feedbacks from your friends and family. For me, this is important when you are over 50 years old. The truth is, this is the time that you can bring back your youth in a fashionable way.
Celebrities like Meryl Streep, 69, has been photographed with different hairstyles. And she’s clearly slaying it. Many older women envied her incredible hairstyles and started to follow her taste in fashion.
Don’t let your age a barrier to your great looks because older women are the inspirations of their brood and the young ones. In my own experience, I love seeing my 54-year-old mom styling her hair. It’s like I have a sister of my own who understands fashion.

Take care of your hair
Your hair is a wonderland. It’s how you make the most of your face and how you carry it with your personality. If you’re wearing your normal hair without protective styles, it’s more susceptible to breakage and damage.
But the trick is, you only have to take good care of it, especially when your hair is regularly exposed to direct sunlight, which can be the cause of breakage. Your scalp is very important because if it’s healthy, you’ll have healthy hair too.
Any hairstyles require great effort in taking care of it and although some of it is low maintenance, it is still important that you know how to care for it. Because really, our hair is alive. They grow and they would love you too as long as you’re gentle with them.
The gist is, you just have to wash it deeply. The scalp, most especially, must be washed thoroughly to avoid any build-ups that can cause dandruff and itchiness. It can also irritate your scalp.
What to do:
- Wet your hair with water.
- Apply at least the size of a quarter of clarifying shampoo.
- Massage it gently to your scalp. Avoid rubbing it too hard to prevent irritation.
- Rinse thoroughly until you see no more bubbles or any shampoo suds.
- Pat dry your hair with a soft towel. Do not rub it as it can cause breakage.
- Use a comb with a wide tooth to ensure that they separate gently. An extremely thick-tooth comb can damage your hair as it can’t even out your hair gently. Do not pull your hair when you comb it to avoid breakage.
- Allow it to dry naturally as much as possible. Using hot tools like hair dryer can also damage your hair.
Protect your hair
If you have a very curly or kinky hair, it can be dry and frizzy. If it’s straight, it can get too oily, which means that you need to wash it more often. Applying a conditioner can make it better although you still need to wash and rinse it thoroughly to avoid build-ups.
Direct exposure to sunlight can damage your hair. You will need to wear a hat or a cap when you’re out and about to protect your hair from the sun’s heat.
Chemicals can damage your hair. Chlorine, for example, which is present in swimming pools can highly cause breakage. Thus, you will need to wash your hair thoroughly after taking a dip at the pool.
Hair products and treatments will also damage your hair. This is one reason why I recommend that you should see a professional hairdresser whenever you need a makeover. Hair colors or chemicals that can straighten or curl your hair are highly damaging.
Hot tools like hair dryers, flat iron, and curling iron can easily break your hair. It’s fine to use them, but do not use them too much.
Split ends are another type of hair damage that don’t look good literally. There’s nothing much you can do about it but cut the ends to remove them. Don’t worry. Your hair will grow back anytime soon.
We all want our hair to look as if a professional hairstylist did it. But with the right tools and access to hair care tips, you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to have healthy hair. Everything starts in you.
Here’s Meryl Streep in her shag cut
Also known as the best and greatest actress of her generation, Streep has been slaying her different hairstyles through the years. She is the best example of style and elegance.
The award-winning actress has worn incredible hairstyles that most older women adore. She has fine hair that leads her to regularly wear a long side swept do most of the time. Her hairstyles took part in all of her movies, where she has won several awards.
She’s been seen with curls, side-parted style, side swept do, housewife look, pouf updo, pouf low bun, and more. Her hairstyle in the 2006 film “The Devil Wears Prada” was one of her fans’ favorite as it portrayed her role as an influential fashion magazine editor.
She’s been also photographed sporting a sleek ponytail, short bob cut, tousled updo, and a shag cut with curly layers. As the years passed, the award-winning actress becomes more attractive in her style.
She has also colored her hair where she is most notable in platinum blonde. But her all-time favorite hairstyle is the layered cut in medium length.
Streep has a natural hair color of light brown, but she has tried different colors, including the medium blonde. She has also colored her hair brunette for a movie role.
She has changed her looks incredibly over the years, becoming more attractive and stylish in her age. She’s an inspiration of every woman her age, and even the young ones admire her.
She is clearly a woman of elegance.

Maintain your healthy hair
The key to everything is a healthy diet. If you don’t eat right, you will not achieve healthy hair. Protein and iron are the two most important in your diet as they can give the hair a healthy life.
That’s very important as the hair cells are the body’s fastest growing cells. They are the first ones to get affected too when you don’t eat healthy food.
There are plenty of vegetables to choose from to maintain and keep your hair healthy. Include fish, leafy vegetables, beans, pumpkin seeds, soybeans, chickpea, and cereals in your diet as these are iron-rich foods.
Medical practitioners recommend that consuming at least 12mg of iron every day is enough to achieve healthy hair. Protein-rich foods that are rich in amino acids can also be paired with iron-rich foods. Milk, cheese, soy, quinoa, yogurt, peas, and lentils are great.
I understand that you might also fret when you see a lot of hair strands when you wash or comb your hair. Losing 100 – 150 hair strands a day is normal, but you’ll need to lessen it as much as possible.
Do not use a narrow-toothed comb because it can break your hair easily. Comb your hair with extra care from roots to tips.
To remove split ends, just trim your hair every after 6 – 8 weeks about 1/4 inches. Try not to wash your hair every day if possible. You can do it at least every other day and also try using the same brand of shampoo and conditioner.
Rinse the conditioner with cool water. Do not use hot or warm water as it can cause breakage.
Try using sulfate-free shampoo
Most shampoos we often use contain sulfate, which can damage your hair. Sulfates are used in hair products, especially shampoo as these are cleaning agents and foam makers. Normally at the labels of shampoo products show the ingredients, where sulfates often appear.
They are labeled as sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. Sometimes, they are also abbreviated as SLS. It can wash your hair’s natural oil down the drain, which might leave your scalp irritated or your hair dry.
Sometimes, it can also damage your hair cuticle. The sulfate-free shampoo doesn’t contain harsh chemicals, especially when you have colored hair.
If you have a sensitive scalp, hairdressers and dermatologists recommended using sulfate-free shampoo as it doesn’t irritate your scalp. If you’re on the hunt of a good sulfate-free shampoo, we have collected some products for you.

Do not hate your hair
Sometimes, you feel like your hair is not cooperating, especially if you need it to work for you. However, it is actually you who makes your hair lazy and fuzzy.
In any case, you are the one who’s not gentle with your hair and sometimes using hot tools too much. You use dry shampoo, or sometimes tugging it with a thick-toothed comb, which causes damage.
You were born with healthy hair and that should be a constant reminder that you are one of luckiest persons. With that being said, you should do your best to keep healthy and happy.
I understand that sometimes, you really need to use hot tools on your hair. It’s fine actually, but do it with moderation. Also, you will need to get an upgraded hot tool because outdated ones can take time in managing your hair. The longer you let your hair exposed to hot tools such as blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron, the bigger the damage it can get.
It is also important that your shampoo and conditioner have both moisturizing and proteins to strengthen your hair. There are a lot of hair products out there that can hydrate and nourish your hair.
Do not use dry shampoo too often. It can leave residue and build-ups that will irritate your scalp. Professional hairdressers suggested to use it at least once or twice a week to avoid any scalp problems. Do it the natural way.
Some people do not shampoo their hair on a regular basis. It’s actually fine, but do it at least every other day or two days. If you don’t shampoo your hair regularly, it can cause seborrhea.
A seborrhea is a medical term for dandruff, which can be extremely itchy, causes redness on the scalp, flakes, as well as hair loss. Thus, doctors recommended that you should thoroughly wash your hair and shampoo it regularly.
Your hair is vulnerable
Your natural hair is susceptible to damage and breakage. It’s a fact that at times, you need to use hair extensions, especially when you need to attend a special occasion.
Synthetic hair extensions are dangerous, especially if you have fine hair as it can easily break. It’s fine to use extensions, but don’t overuse it. In the instance that you can’t avoid using it, hair experts suggest that you use treatments to strengthen and moisturize your hair.
It is recommended that you use it at least once a week. Treatments that are rich in vitamins, proteins, plant and fruit extracts are best for fine hair.
If you also want silky and shiny hair, the best option would be the keratin treatment. However, dermatologists warned that it can cause hair damage, but recommended instead to use leave-in conditioners.
Leave-in conditioners have vitamins and proteins combined to moisturize as well as keep your hair shiny even on different weather conditions. Keratin is also not safe for breastfeeding moms because it can lower the milk supply.
Further, rubbing your hair with a towel can cause frizziness, breakage, and dryness. If you rub your hair, the towel can cause friction to your hair cuticles that can weaken your strands.
I remember during my college days when I had my hair straightened for my graduation day. My hairdresser told me to never rub my hair with a towel or everything we did will go down the drain.
He instead asked me to pat dry my hair to avoid friction. Yes, it will take a longer time to dry your hair, but it’s all worth it.

Ditch the narrow-toothed comb
I’ve heard a few times that brushing your hair a hundred times a day can make it shiny. Is it true? The answer might be no.
Combs with thick and narrow teeth will only cause damage to your hair. Using a narrow-toothed comb is damaging, and you will only have a hard time detangling your hair.
A hairbrush can also make your struggle and worse, your hair will be the one to suffer. Try to finger comb your wet hair, or use a wide-toothed comb as it works best.
Condition your hair
It will take a lot of effort, but if you want to achieve shiny and great-looking hair, you will need to take time in deeply conditioning your strands. Try almond oil, coconut oil, hair conditioner and mix them together with water.
There is also shea butter and some home-made hair masks that you can try if you don’t want to go to the salon for treatments and hair conditioning. Mix egg, mustard oil, and curd together or avocado and peppermint oil.
You can also try coconut oil, egg, and olive oil. If you’re losing hair, olive oil is the best remedy and you can mix it with other ingredients that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins.
Getting a new hairstyle should not be too much of a pain, especially for women over 50 years of age. There are tons of hairstyles that you can try. You only have to consult your hairdresser with the style that fits you well.
