Retail Report: James Perse

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

The James Perse brand had developed a loyal following for their super soft, luxurious basics. T-shirts, dresses, shorts and more are made from the most exquisite fabrics making it no surprise that James Perse, a Closet Couture retailer, is known by many to make “the perfect tee.” We caught up with Alex Zalewski, the online merchandiser behind James Perse, to find out about the philosophy behind the coveted brand.

1) What is the philosophy behind the James Perse brand?

James Perse’s passion for minimalist architecture influenced by warm west-coast indoor outdoor living and the casual clothing that's inspired by it, ultimately resulted in James' personal design philosophy and aesthetic – low maintenance high fashion – emphasizing elegance and comfort, and pairing sophistication with simplicity.

Thus, the James Perse collections result in classic pieces using the finest fabrics giving the wearer an exceptional fit and feel.

2) What are your current top 5 sellers?

During the summer season the following styles are extremely popular:

Supima Long Tank: using a very soft supima cotton fabric, this provides a great layering piece which is also lux enough to wear alone.

The Raglan Scoop T: a loose-fitting short sleeve t-shirt with scoop neck, this style is made from sheer slub jersey which has a unique textured feel and look.

The new Malibu Collection offers great beachwear or casual styles featuring the print of popular beaches in the Malibu area.

All of our dresses are very popular this season, they are a seamless blend of lux and casual which appeal to the loyal fans of James Perse.

3) Are there any t-shirt trends that we can expect to see more of?

There will be many different trends this season. Some include slightly elongated shirts that hit the hip and are flattering to many shapes, scoop neck styles, distressing techniques such as worn edges and washed, soft fabrics. You will see strong shapes in our long skirts and dresses, along with subtle fine detailing such as twisted seams.

4) What do women love about James Perse tees?

Foremost, women love the luxury fit and feel that comes with our tees. This gives them a everyday casual luxury that can be a must have closet piece for many different occasions. Women also love and appreciate not only the fit, feel and comfort of our tees, but also the quality. Our shirts are known to keep their form and feel for a very long time and after many washes. Lesser quality tees from other brands simply don't compare.

5) Describe the perfect tee.

What to Wear: Meet the Parents

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

By Courtney Peterson

I thought I’d ask some of my co-workers here at Closet Couture to share some of their most stressful wardrobe experiences when meeting the parents of a significant other. Classified under the category of the ‘maximum stress wardrobe scenario,’ meeting the parents can be tricky. But with our strategic outfitting planning agenda, we’ve got you covered to look classy and beautiful for a variety of some of the most challenging meet the parent scenarios.

City Girl Goes Country:

Looking stylish should be translatable for comfort and convenience, especially in this type of scenario. While dress to impress may be a different mantra for you urban fashionistas, we’ve come up with an outfit so you can maintain your stylish presence even in the countryside. We suggest pairing a Luella Godfrey blouse with Vanessa Bruno’s detailed trousers and Chloe’s interwoven red sandals. Accessorize with Erickson Beamson’s Gypsy sun earrings and a Halston shoulder bag.

The Sunday Brunch Scenario:

The key to presenting your Sunday brunch best is a classic look that reflects your personal style. For spring pairing a floral Erdem Laverna skirt with a classic white tee is a great combination. Judging the nature of this particular Sunday brunch, choose between flats or heels- we’ve selected Lanvin metallic cross sandals or Miu Miu’s strappy sandals. VIVRE’s sterling silver bangle and this Burberry willow leather clutch is a nice touch to pull everything together.

Family Reunion Situation:

It is important to be prepared to be comfortable to endure a potentially less than relaxing situation. Depending on the location, we’ve selected two looks that have you fashionably covered. If the reunion takes place at a park, for instance, we suggest pairing jeans with this Moschino Cheap & Chic neck tie cardigan. In the event that you’ve been assigned babysitting duties, we’ve selected these chic Lanvin satin sneakers, just in case.

On the other hand, if your reunion takes place at an upscale restaurant, we’ve put together an evening look that is perfect for all familial encounters. We recommend this Elizabeth & James Lucinda dress and classic Louboutin heels. For a pop of color, pair this Alexander Wang clutch with House of Lavande’s Margeurite de Calois cuff.

Accessory Report: MADE Jewelry

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

By Samantha Duenas (www.sosupersam.com)

Based in San Francisco, MADE Jewelry is only a year old but is already making sophisticated moves with three collections carried by numerous retailers from San Diego to the Bay Area. With owners Debbie Sheen & Abigail Rivamonte frequently jetting up and down the California coast as powerhouse attorneys by day and jewelry designers by night, it’s hard to keep up with their almost superwoman lifestyle. But I found a rare free moment to ask Abigail & Debbie about life and their new line.

S: Jewelry designing attorneys! First off I need to ask you how you accomplish it all: Coffee or tea?

A&D: COFFEE with brown sugar and half and half.

Blackberry or iPhone?

A&D: iPhone. We have a love/hate relationship with our iPhones. But at the end of the day we still love her even if she drops our calls!

Mac or PC?

D: Mac for sure.

A: PC. However, I’ve been getting the “blue screen of death” lately so I may have to retire my PC for a Mac.

Now let’s get into the jewelry. Where does the name MADE come from, and what is a MADE Woman?

A&D: MADE was a perfect name because: 1) all of our jewelry is handMADE by us and not outsourced for production; and 2) the word MADE sparks up images of a MADE woman. Our idea of a MADE woman is someone who leads a multifaceted life, but takes it all in a stride. She puts on her game face at work; unleashes her sultry side in the limelight; is edgy on the streets; and is youthful and carefree during her down time. She is fashion forward and forward thinking and her jewelry accentuates her dynamic spirit.

You celebrated your 1 year anniversary, congratulations! What has been the most rewarding part of MADE Jewelry so far?

A&D: The best part of this whole experience is seeing women out and about wearing our jewelry. When we randomly see someone with our piece we still get really excited about it! We usually approach them and ask them where their jewelry is from and when they say “MADE” we immediately light up and introduce ourselves as the designers.

What inspires your jewelry?

A&D: We draw our inspiration from music and all the amazing women in our lives. We both grew up listening and falling in love with hip-hop, soul, and reggae music. It has really shaped who we are as individuals and has impacted our sense of style. When we’re designing a new piece, music is ALWAYS blasting because it makes us feel alive and really gets the creative energy flowing. Right now we are inspired by DJ Beatnick and Mr. Mention, who crafted our latest MADE Mixtape.

The new LACED collection is out! Tell me more about it.

A&D: The line focuses on the simplicity of layering bronze, gold, and gunmetal chains with unique design concepts. It’s different from our previous collections because the focus is on the design of the piece and not the gemstone or charm. The line is really versatile and gives women the freedom to wear pieces the way they want to and whenever they want to.

A lot of your product is named after music, but I noticed pieces in the LACED collection named for fashion bloggers such as “Rumi” & “Susie Bubble”. Coincidence?

A&D: Not at all a coincidence! The versatility of this line really leant itself to the creative women we’ve been inspired by in the blogosphere. We feel that each of these tribute pieces fits that individual’s signature style, something that we could envision them adding into their own accessory rotation.

If you could collaborate with any other label or designer, who would it be?

A&D: We would love to do a project with Lanie from Hellz Bellz. She’s an industry maven and is not afraid to take chances and stay true to herself—now that’s what real style is all about!

What can we expect from MADE in its second year?

A&D: The sky is the limit! We have some exciting collaborations with other designers and artists in the works. We’re going to keep expanding our website and blog and continue to lace more beautiful women with MADE Jewelry!

Kirna Zabete Winner Announced!

Attached Blog Image

To ring in 2009, Closet Couture teamed up with the ultra-hip downtown NYC retailer Kirna Zabete to give one our members a wardrobe update and Rochelle Niccolls was the lucky winner! She received $2009 in credit towards a closet makeover from Beth Buccini and Sarah Easley, the perennially stylish duo behind the retail hotspot. Rochelle, aka “TambourineGirl” gave us some insight into her personal style and filled us in on what exactly she’s pining for at Kirna Zabete.

1) What was your initial reaction when you found out that you had won $2009 of credit and styling services from Kirna Zabete?

I was shocked and thrilled. It’s been such a bright spot in my day to think about.

2) Are there any particular pieces from Kirna Zabete that you’re looking to add to your wardrobe?

The Giambattista Valli bow belt is adorable. Really, anything by Giambattista Valli is beautiful. The Lanvin leopard ballet flats are also drool-worthy.

3) What does your dream closet look like?

Clone the closets of Edie Sedgwick and Audrey Hepburn, pepper in some modern punk and rockabilly, some 20’s Gatsby Glitz, throw them into a blender and what comes out would probably be close.

4) You live in Berkeley, CA. Where do you like to shop in your city?

We have a lot of great vintage shops in the Bay Area, and I love poking around them to find something unique. Sharks and Mars on Telegraph in Berkeley are wonderful for that. I’m also in love with Anthropologie and Betsey Johnson.

5) Who or what inspires your style?

I love all the looks from the Warhol 60’s, with all those stripes and metallics, and also from the 60’s spy show The Prisoner. Everyone looks so snappy in those bright colors, geometric shapes and clean lines. I also really admire Zooey Deschanel’s style, and her funky folky babydoll looks. Generally, though, I don’t ascribe to any particular style – I’ll wear anything that’s interesting creatively, or just plain pretty.

6) What do you love about Closet Couture?

It’s like a fashion lover’s diary. Being able to easily remember what I wore on a given day brings all the memories back to me because there’s such a visceral connection between clothes and how I was feeling at the time.

A Minute With: Pamela Love, Jewelry Designer

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

Pamela Love has made a name for herself designing a distinctly beautiful line of jewelry unlike anything we’ve seen. A certain darkness comes through in her craft with elements of nature and the supernatural shown in each of her pieces, each with their own unique allure that we’re drawn to. Inspired by magic and spirituality, Love’s Fall ’09 collection consists of quartz crystal necklaces wrapped in cobras, tribal-style bracelets composed of heishi beads bound together by leather, peacock rings decorated with emeralds, and eagle claw pendants dangling from delicate chains, to name a few. Her jewelry is designed to be worn by creative, free spirits with their own sense of personal style “and an eye for interesting things.” We took a glimpse inside Pamela’s world and here’s what we found out:

1) When did you know you wanted to be a jewelry designer?

I don't think it was something I ever really knew. It just sort of happened and one day I was like “Oh wow, I'm a jewelry designer.”

2) How would you describe the Pamela Love girl (or guy?)

Someone (male or female) who is creative, carefree, and not too concerned with trends. They have good style and an eye for interesting things.

3) What inspired your most recent collection?

Magic and Spirituality

4) Who would you like to see in Pamela Love?

People who really love and appreciate what I am doing

5) Who are your style icons?

Neil Young, Bianca Jagger, Jennifer Herrema of the band Royal Trux, Joan Didion, Bob Dylan, Edie Beale, Louise Nevelson, and my grandmother

6) What do you love about New York?

The summer

7) What 3 items could you never part with?

My jeweler’s bench and tools

My bike

My drum kit

My lucky Led Zeppelin T-shirt

(That was four. Sorry!)

The Perfect Closet: In Your 40s

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

There are numerous beauties that make it to our “40 and fabulous” list: Halle Berry, Helena Christensen, Salma Hayek, Demi Moore, and Sarah Jessica Parker, to name a few. But it’s not only celebrities that we’re inspired by when it comes to aging gracefully – it’s the women who we see nearly every day that are busy juggling their careers and personal lives. For this week’s “Perfect Closet,” we pulled some key pieces for those fearless forty-somethings that are perfect for mixing-and-matching this season. We know it can take time to build the ideal closet, but investing in items that have staying power will most certainly yield successful results and turn an effortless look into effortlessly chic.

A beautifully draped dress like this one from Bottega Veneta is a flattering silhouette and is easy to wear. We accessorized it with Lanvin satin thong sandals for a springtime look, but it could easily be worn with a tall boot for fall. VIVRE’s Faux Croc Allegra bag in a subtle shade of gold is both sophisticated and versatile and can be carried day or night. Statement jewelry is essential to every woman’s wardrobe, no matter what age. We chose this Oval Fringe Necklace from VIVRE and a pair of 1980s Ciner Coral earrings from House of Lavande, both of which can be worn with basics or dressier ensembles.

As much as we love black, we also suggest opting for pops of color, especially for spring. Black pants are a necessity for mixing-and-matching, like these from United Bamboo, but we like the idea of pairing them with a bright blouse. We were drawn to this vivid green silk top from Phillip Lim for the color as well as the asymmetrical cut. For accessories, we turned to the trusty Allegra bag from VIVRE and kept the House of Lavande Ciner Coral earrings, adding an additional pop of color to the mix. We added a bold bracelet and strappy sandals by Chloè for a spring look, but throwing on a blazer and a chic ankle boot works well for fall.

A couple of shirts from Burberry

A cool nylon motorcycle jacket from Public School

Some sneakers from Puma (they’re doing more stuff without leather, yay!)

Don’t base your career on $$$ but rather passion, and everything else will fall into place…

Style Icon: Alberta Ferretti

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

Alberta Ferretti has established a successful brand of chic, ultra-feminine clothing and accessories that speaks to women who possess a sophisticated, elegant gracefulness. Her eponymous line is frequently seen on the red carpet, worn by A-list celebrities and style stars around the world. Beautifully draped gowns, elaborately decorated cocktail dresses made from luxurious fabrics, and bejeweled heels are just a few of Ferretti’s stunning pieces from her two collections – Alberta Ferretti and Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti. Here, Alberta gives us a peek into her world and shares some of her own style philosophies.

1) How would you describe the Alberta Ferretti woman?

The Alberta Ferretti woman is elegant, feminine and modern. She embodies a timeless sophistication, yet is poised with a unique confidence and beauty. She has an intellectual curiosity and is willing to experiment with her wardrobe choices because she is always evolving with today’s society.

2) Who or what do you look to for design inspiration?

I live my life with an open mind and constantly absorb my environment, as you never know what situation you will encounter or who you will meet. People, art, literature, film, even the weather, are all elements that contribute to my designs and inspire me to always reinvent myself, and my collections. There’s always something to learn from what it is happening around us.

3) Describe your personal style. Which other designers rule your closet?

For me, it’s all about being practical and functional with your wardrobe, yet never compromising the elegance and style of the clothes. I don’t like to be too fussy, so I try to keep it simple and chic. If I have to work, I prefer wearing black pants and black jacket; it is practical and elegant, and lets me function with ease through the day. At night, for a more formal occasion, I usually choose a long dress to feel like I’m dressed up from what I typically wear during the day.

4) What is one trend that you wish would go away?

A woman should always look chic and elegant; therefore the urban trend of dressing down in jeans and looking messy isn’t appealing to me. Mixing luxury with cheap and poor quality items doesn’t enhance a woman’s beauty and compromises the idea of investing in pieces that are worthy of the investment.

5) Tell us about your first fashion memory.

My first fashion memory is of my mother and the beautiful dresses she would wear: they were so special, intricate and elegant. She always accessorized everything beautifully! She was very influential in my career as a designer and also influenced my personal style.

6) What was your most recent luxe buy?

A pair of antique earrings.

7) How do you like to shop? Do you prefer going with friends or alone?

The best way to go shopping is alone and with plenty of time on your hands, so you can really evaluate what it is you are buying. Sometimes I will go with my friends if we are going to stop and have lunch or afternoon cocktails. However, if I have to purchase something important, or that requires a lot of thought, I prefer going alone.
