How We'd Wear: Colored, Textured Tights

Crazy legs. They're this fall's “It” layer. Right now, tights are colored, textured, perforated, embellished and, though we love their complicated nature, they can be challenging to pull off. We've definitely bought cutie tights by the armload when traveling to more tight-friendly spots (Italy! Sweden!) and they've not been used nearly enough. But not this season. This season, we at Closet Couture are letting our legs get their rainbow on. And here's how…

Ashley says “It's key to let the legs become the statement of the look when wearing textured/colored tights such as these. By choosing pieces that are both neutral and textured such as these, you are emphasizing the splash of purple that pops from the boot and the look is instantly both sophisticated and rich.”

Aihui says, “If I can't pull off this naughty cowboy look in real life, I know at least I can pull it off here on ClosetCouture.com!!!”

Kelli says, “Feeling fabulous is all about making an outfit with my favorite color combination of nature, purple and green, or in this case, turquoise and magenta. The accessories add a little attitude of punk, but keep it chic all in black. The textured tights add a lot to this outfit
by pulling in the matching hat and ring!”

Feeling Fabulous

Kelli had a second take on the tight: “The textured tights and fabulous jewelry give this simple chic look a new twist with its lavender accents. The simplicity of black and white basics, with a touch of lavender help this outfit stand out a little more. The jewelry helps convert this look to an outfit that could be worn to work or in the evening!”

A Touch of Lavender

Alyson played with the texture of the tights by adding pieces that also had a ton of texture but limited color, like vintage beaded earrings, a floral/camo dress, ruffle-y hair pins, a luxe Armani bag with a woven feel.

Chic of the Week: MKW013000

A wise woman once said, “In regards to my husband as related to shopping I have a new philosophy: look but don't touch. touch but don't try. try but don't buy. buy but don't tell. tell but say it was a gift / <$20.” Meet the shopping-strategist herself, our Chic of the Week, Michelle, aka MKW013000, whose classic-with-a-twist taste and verve for fashion have us loving all over her.

And we just found out how not alone we are in our MKW013000 TLF… her HUSBAND is on the site and has an adorable closet, too. JustinB is all kinds of prepster hip… we'll show you some of his outfits after we see some of MKW's… promise.

Back to Michelle… There's something about a gal who rocks out outfits with her own clothes that gets us all breathless. The constraint of reality makes those “I really wear this” looks all the more compelling. And because fantasizing about who we might be, in our really real reality, is one of our fave parts of Closet Couture we love it when members get excited about this dimension of CC, too!

And, ta-da, here are some of her cute looks (and some of Justin B's!)…

How We'd Wear: Preen Over-the-Knee boot

Attached Blog Image

You're a pretty woman, but not THAT kind of pretty woman. So when considering how to negotiate an over-the-knee boot, you'll want to think about mixing textures, proportions and colors to keep it reflective of your personal style, totally today and, of course, decidedly not PW.

Enter Preen's Hi Leg Boot, available at Topshop, worked into outfits by the Closet Couture team.

Alyson used the boot like a black stocking and tempered its severity by picking a blush silk-knit frock from Stella McC, sparkles from House of Lavande and an architectural (vegan!) clutch from Matt & Nat.

Ablush in Over-the-Knee boots

Ashley went for more of a rocker vibe with the boot by mixing a variety of textures to create a look that's great for a fall night out on the town.

Chris went way uptown with a posh party dress and statement jewelry.

Knee High Action by Chris

For Aihui, there's never better time to wear a knee-high boot than fall: “For an earthy-tone look, I love to pair my boots with a lighter toned dress and earthy-colored accessories.”

Fetty is a cutting-edge jewelry company based in Brooklyn, New York. The company was created when up and coming rock and roller, Justin Tranter, began designing necklaces to sell at shows for his garage glam band Semi Precious Weapons. Thanks to a loyal fan base and Tranter's entrepreneurial spirit, Fetty's jewels have caught not only our attention but also the likes of Urban Outfitters, who began selling their jewelry nationwide. Tranter has also created a 14K gold, sterling silver and diamond line created for Barneys COOP (shown here) and has won the hearts of celebrity clientele including Kate Moss. Tranter's aesthetic keeps Fetty on the forefront of trendsetting styles by staying true to his rock and roll spirit.

NYC SHOWS: Jewelry in the tents

I'd always wondered before this season what exactly being “in the tents” really meant – what kind of tent experience, and what goes on in there.

There is a big main tent where all the registration for each show happens – you show your credentials, that type of thing. Then you line up, or breeze in late, for each show separately – and all around are little displays of products that companies want to throw into the audience's universe. The one that caught my eye this time was the jewelry.

Above pictured are a bunch of jewelry lines that were displayed, including one that is being sold at W Hotels. Which ones do you like?

How We'd Wear: Smythe's Puff-Sleeve Equestrian Blazer

Attached Blog Image

Fall's strong shoulder, though not for the meek, by no means requires one to channel Star Trek, Joan Collins, Working Girl or otherwise be a victim of the fashion way-back machine.

Smythe's puff-sleeve equestrian blazer presents a sillhouette that inspired a the Closet Couture team to style in both classic and trendier ways.

Kelli, our style editor, worked in stirrup pants and a black turtleneck (we LOVE turtlenecks this fall) and used accessories to make her look stay totally “now.”

Black Knight
Alyson went for a classic take on the jacket in order to let the fresh details of the piece stand out.

Tally Ho

Chris put together this look: “this jacket reminds me too much of one I had as a kid – I could never get away from it, it was Ralph Lauren and I never could figure out how to make it my own. This is my grown up attempt, but I think I am back where I started. But I like the hat with it.”

Ashley: I am loving the mix of brown and black here and am channeling a bit of Blair Waldorf with this look.

Chic of the Week: Melrose

melroseWe adore Melrose! She's amazing at styling new trends, like the strong shoulder, into real-world looks. This Chic of the Week is a “Libby Arts Major” (her words – LOL) from Tampa, Florida and what she loves working with right now is, “Leather, purple, 1940's opulence, Blazers, Slouchy t's.” Just FYI, the picture above is the REAL Melrose and the one to the left is her user picture on Closet Couture.

And her closet is 2die4. It goes on for miles! Follow her to borrow her stuff… We use it all the time; especially the accessories. Hello, hat heaven! You can follow here here. >>

You have to check out her album of outfits (here). There looks created around the likes of Balmain blazers, uptown Lanvin top and sailor shirts.

Favorite Dress Ever Winner… FallenStar

Attached Blog Image

Our hearts skipped a beat when we saw Starr Frost's diaphanous ruffled frock posted to our Facebook page for our “Favorite Dress Ever” contest, and we swooned a little over how she styled something ultragirly into something tough.

But we totally, full-on died when we learned this… She made her dress herself!

“My fav party dress was this pretty chiffon ruffle dress I bought online at thefallenstarboutique.com for my 25th birthday!” she wrote on our wall. What she left out was that thefallenstarboutique is where she sells things she designed and made.

Hello?! How fabulous is that? Starr won a $50 gift certificate from Shopbop; that's how fabulous it is.

Starr's member name on Closet Couture is FallenStar. Check her out and follow her! >>

NYC SHOWS: TULEH

In his show notes, Brian Bradley, creative director / designer for Tuleh, cited a Scandinavian wedding as a major inspiration for his show. I was so impressed with the looks capping the show, strong already, that I wanted to give it a shout out to all the future brides out there.

But let's start at the beginning – Tuleh was a packed house, stadium style, with star and editor power everywhere. From Kelly Rutherford front row (you may notice her in the background of some of my photos – she was in my eyeline) to a row of Vogue, Glamour, Allure and Bazaar editors, American and French editions representing, and more.

The show started off with creams and navys, with tops that had interesting details that would make one want to buy the pieces even though one may already have inventory in that palette. The feminine details of broochs and flowing ties for tops, plus short shorts that were elegantly tailored, gorgeously wearable and elegant for any occassion. Though the color scheme was relatively subdued except for a bright citrus trench and a turquoise coat (not together) it was instantly classic.

The show had a Grace Jones tip of the hat, or rather hoodie, for several looks, which were successful though perhaps more of a risk for the day to day. But let the hoodie drop, and the pieces all work so well together without being too much for real life.

The final cluster of outfits were the abovementioned Swedish wedding…. if any of you have had the fun and luck to go to a wedding in Europe, you know that the whole dress situation is drastically different. There is not much of a sweetheart neckline with flowing skirt affilition – rather, the dresses are apt to be cream colored and tailored with a higher neckline, often short sleeves and sometimes long. It is less the “fairytale princess” look which dominates the American wedding, and more of an understated elegance illustrating how beautiful the cream spectrum is when highly tailored. The overall look is more editorial, thus.

The wedding dresses were so chic and elegant, and provoked visions of a woodland ceremony at dusk in a grove of lindens illuminated by candles. Pretty fabulous headpiececs accompanied each look.

My favorites from the collection are above – what do you think?
