Packing List: Thanksgiving Weekend

Attached Blog Image

It's hard to believe it, but the holidays are almost upon us, and with them, the inevitable trips home to see family and friends. For some reason, it always seems like Thanksgiving in particular arrives practically without warning. Suddenly, it's Tuesday night, and you've got a 10 AM flight the next morning. You haven't packed, and you're not sure what you want to take home.

Well, we've tried to take a bit of the guesswork out of the equation for you. Our packing list for Thanksgiving is pictured. A couple of key items:

Rose's Oversize Top, perfect for Thanksgiving day, was the first item we knew we had to pack. There's nothing better than a comfortable, easy piece to throw on when you're preparing for a day devoted entirely to eating. We'd pair it with Zero Maria Cornejo's Stretch Cotton Jodphurs. Stretch Cotton: need we say more?

We also expect there will be an obligatory evening out–and really, when you're returning home and are aware of the possibility of running into old acquaintances (not to mention an ex-boyfriend or two), you want to look your best. Rag & Bone's Sparkle Vest, a lightly shimmery tank, to be worn with a pair of skinny black jeans, and the shoe of the season, Balmain's Fringed Bootie, fits the bill perfectly.

Don't forget–you can create your own packing list through the site, too–just double-click on any item in your closet, and go to the “Pack It” tab.

Rose Oversize Top, available through ClosetCouture Retailer Presse. Zero Maria Cornejo Stretch Cotton Jodphurs, Rag & Bone Sparkle Vest, and Acne Hex Cash Jeans, available at LaGarconne.com. Giuseppe Zanotti for Balmain Booties, available at Net-a-Porter.com.

Holiday Catalogs Worth Saving

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

The holidays are upon us, and we’ll be the first to admit that we’re making our list and checking it twice. And thanks to the flood of holiday catalogs that have been arriving on our doorsteps, there has been no shortage of gift giving (and receiving!) inspiration. We’ve rounded up a few holiday catalogs from our favorite retailers that we think are worth the browse for their ability to pin-point exactly what we’re looking for. Proenza Schouler’s covetable round shades from Barneys? Check. A hooded fringe poncho from Anthropologie? Check. A souped up motorcycle from Neiman Marcus? Not so much. But we couldn’t help but daydream about what our lives would be like with a new ride at a hefty six-figure price tag. Here, our top picks for must-save holiday catalogs.

Neiman Marcus: Despite the economic downturn, Neiman Marcus has managed to create an ultra exclusive Christmas book this year. Fantasy items include: 535 square feet of the Dallas Cowboy's turf for $500,000, a $110,000 140-horsepower motorcycle that looks like it is off the set of Batman, an opportunity to play a game with the Harlem Globetrotters for $100,000, a rare 10th century braided god viking ring for $25,000 and his and hers life-size Lego statues at $60,000 a piece. Yeah, we know…these are out of our budget too, but what would Christmas be without a little fantasy!

140-Horsepower Motorcycle available through the Neiman Marcus Catalog, $110,000

J.Crew: J. Crew seems to have everything right these days — including their gift guide. Taking the guesswork out of shopping for everyone on your list, J. Crew has broken down their gift card by both the recipient and the denomination. So if you are looking for a gift for your new niece, you can shop in the $25 & Under for Girls category or pick out something for your big brother in the $75 & Under for Men. We love the cable knit ballet slippers with pom-poms for girls. This is really genius – We wish all retailers would make it this easy for us!

Cable Knit Ballet Slippers available through the J. Crew Catalog, $39.50

Barneys: We’re smitten by Barney’s mantra of the season: “Have a Hippie Holiday, Peace + Love”. There’s something for everyone on our list in their holiday catalog (and plenty for us, too!) – psychedelic Paul Smith wallets that would put a smile on the face of any Grateful Dead fan, cashmere travel blankets for the jet-setters we’re all envious of, and gold pave’ diamond pendants from Jennifer Meyer that make for the perfect gift for the women in the family. On our wish list? Round sunglasses from Proenza Schouler. We’ve been nice, dear Santa, and we promise not to be naughty.

Proenza Schouler Round Sunglasses available through the Barneys catalog, $310

Anthropologie: It isn’t just Neiman Marcus that creates a fantasy to lure in shoppers. Anthropologie’s “Wonder” catalog just landed on our desks and let’s just say they’ve got the fantasy factor down pat, minus the high dollar price tags. Gifts for the home including decorative peacock bowls, tea party candelabras, and cozy knit throws have that old world vintage look that we’ve come to expect from one of our favorite retailers. Statement jewels, oversized leather totes, and our favorite – the diamond snow poncho are all winter essentials.

Diamond Snow Poncho available through the Anthropologie catalog, $118

A Minute With: Kime Buzzelli

Attached Blog Image

Kime Buzzelli has long been an influential fashion force in Los Angeles, running the show with her charmingly cool east side boutique, Show Pony. Devoted to the bygone eras of fashion, Kime’s personal style is not only reflected in her wardrobe, but in her artwork as well. She creates paintings inspired by fashion, music, and the make believe, and frequently collaborates with major brands such as Vans and Zune Arts, dreaming up dazzling illustrations for various products. We caught up with Kime for a Q & A session on her personal style.

1) Who or what influences your style?
I guess I am influenced by compositional elements, similar to painting. I like layering things, opposing color schemes, asymmetry, surrealism – ha ha. Who? I'd say my influences are Zandra Rhodes, Annie Hall, Ziegfeld Follies, and the Maries in the movie DAISIES!

2) What's the one item in your closet that you can't live without?

The most useless, of course! I have this super old insane Cockettes dress constructed of old doilies. It's from the late ‘60s or early ‘70s and screams Trashy Flapper.

3) Who are your favorite designers?
I love Bill Gibb, Zandra Rhodes, Poiret, Biba, Tsumori Chisato, and Galliano.

4) What was your most recent luxe purchase?

Besides a new car!? I recently purchased for myself an expensive ring from an estate sale dating back to the 1800's. It has a lovely art deco-like band.

5) What do you think about the current state of fashion?

I kinda like the way people have been liberated to wear whatever and carry their freak flag, however I'm interested to see women stop wearing shapeless things and return to the sexy siren style of Brigitte Bardot!

6) What can we expect next from Kime Buzzelli?

I'm doing a lot of new art projects – like t-shirts with the label Blood is the New Black, Urban Decay makeup packaging, and this winter my snowboard comes out from Monument. In my spare time, I'm just working on paintings for an upcoming show and making koo koo accessories for myself.

Celebrity Style: Agyness Deyn

Attached Blog Image

At last night's Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund Award ceremony (Congrats, Alexander Wang!), Agyness Deyn stepped out in an androgynous tuxedo look that really caught our attention. Clearly, with a complex look like this, there's a lot to unpack–and to be entirely honest, it's still one we'd put in the “inspiration” category. (In other words, we're not suggesting you try this at home.) However, what makes this look work on Deyn is that each of the pieces themselves is perfect. We love Deyn's shrunken little tuxedo jacket, and perfectly slim, cropped formal pants. Both would look equally great broken up, for a more casual look, or together (but paired with camisole or t-shirt) for a formal affair of your own. Instead of pulling out that typical LBD for an upcoming cocktail party, why not try a tuxedo look like this one?

Clearly, Deyn also pays big-time attention to her accessories. While we think an off-kilter chapeau and death-defying cherry-colored heels might be a bit much at a non-fashion industry affair, an extra bit of consideration when adding on the extras can really make or a break a look. Our point: if you're trying out a cropped pant for a cocktail party, why not go the extra mile and add a colored or embellished shoe? And of course, nothing says evening like a little lady-like clutch.

Accessory Report: Eco-Friendly Totes by Ali Rapp

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

The term “eco-friendly fashion” doesn’t always convey images of über stylish wares. Sure, there are some green lines to lust after, but let’s face it – there is still a long way to go before eco-chic dominates the fashion world. For some designers, green has become a necessity in the design process, and ethical manufacturing is equally essential. On our radar is a new line of eco-totes from Peruvian designer, Ali Rapp. After six years of collaborating with Anna Sui on handbags, hoodies, and t-shirts sold under the name Ali Rapp for Anna Sui, Rapp decided to create her own brand, launching with oversized canvas totes that are handmade in Peru using 100% pima cotton and natural inks. Five styles of the bag will be available come spring with slogans such as “I’m Totally Green”, “Earth Day Everyday”, and our favorite – “Green, That’s What’s Up!” Lucky for us, Rapp will make three of the five styles available for the holidays by special order. Finally, a weekend holdall that will make trips to the farmer’s market a fashionable affair.

Contact ali@alirapp.com to purchase your eco-friendly tote. All styles are $68.

What's On This Week

Attached Blog Image

It started with Alexander Wang, continued at Proenza Schouler, and now it's even happening at Reebok: 90s nostalgia is here to stay. Now open at 169 Bowery in New York, Reebok's Pop-Up Shop, releasing a new limited-edition sneaker each week, and of course, they have plenty of Pumps in stock. Don't wait too long, though–it closes December 14th.

Also on in NYC: “Art & Love in Renaissance Italy,” a new exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum devoted to tokens created in honor of amore. We're especially excited to see the exquisite examples of jewelry that are sure to be on display. Something tells us that the term “statement jewelry” had the same meaning in the 16th century as it does now…

Out west, Liz Goldwyn and special guests Dita Von Teese and Ava Garter will host a special forum, “From Burlesque to Couture: The Ultimate Show and Tell,” discussing Goldwyn's HBO documentary and book, Pretty Things, at LACMA, on Monday November 17th.

Up the coast, SFMOMA opens “New Works: Mai-Thu Perret,” the latest installation in her ongoing series, The Crystal Frontier. While you're out and about, we'd highly suggest stopping by the de Young Museum to check out the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition: over 130 fabulous pieces of apparel and accessories by the legendary designer are on display.

Reebok Pop Up Shop, 169 Bowery, New York. Open through December 14th.

“Art & Love in Renaissance Italy,” at the Metropolitan Museum, New York. Open through February 16th. www.metmuseum.org.

“From Burlesque to Couture: The Ultimate Show & Tell,” at LACMA, Los Angeles. Monday, Noevember 17th, 7:30 PM. www.lacma.org.

“New Works: Mai-Thu Perret,” at SFMOMA, San Francisco. Open through March 1st. www.sfmoma.org.

“Yves Saint Laurent,” at the de Young Museum, San Francisco. Open through April 5th. www.famsf.org/deyoung.

Seasonal & Basic Closet Update: Wet Winter Weather

Attached Blog ImageAttached Blog ImageAttached Blog Image

If you're located anywhere in the Northeastern part of the country (and really, on any part of the East Coast), you're probably looking out your window today and saying to yourself, “Rain, rain, go away!” Well, that's what we tend to do when the weather is less than ideal. Thus, we were inspired to update our Seasonal and Basic Closet with not just all of the fabulous resort and holiday items that are rolling out right now, but a few wet-weather essentials, too.

First up: Vanessa Bruno's Wool Tweed Cape, which has that perfect je ne sais quois that makes for an incredibly stylish piece of outerwear. We love the fact that even though it's a cape, there are arm holes, which mean you'll have your hands free to wrangle your umbrella, BlackBerry, purse (and shopping bags) with ease.

We really have to hand it to Phillip Lim: “scharf” is a moniker that says it all. His accessory is the perfect feel-good, super-cozy mix of scarf and shawl, and the color is ideal: blue, like the skies we hope to see ahead, but also a very specific blue–cerulean, a color which always reminds us of one of our favorite fashion films of all time.

And finally, if you don't have a pair of these in your closet yet, we'd highly suggest making the investment. They're incredibly worth it. Hunter's Welington Boots are an essential wardrobe item for everyone from the Queen of England to Fashion's reigning Queen, Kate Moss. We bet you could benefit from them, too.

Be sure to stop by both the Seasonal and Basic Closet to see the other items we've added. We hope you'll be as delighted as we are by the awesome Alexander Wang Tees, Organic By John Patrick Slip Dresses, and Roberto Cavalli Flat Sandals, among others. Which reminds us–while we're stuck indoors, it's time to get back to making our packing list for our dream beach vacation…

Vanessa Bruno Wool Tweed Cape and Philip Lim Scharf, available at LaGarconne.com. Hunter Wellington Boots, available at Net-a-Porter.com.
