I love to wear minis in the winter, but feel my really exposed in them in the summer without my tights and leggings--it's too hot to wear them in the summer where I live. I saw an ad with a Japanese girl wearing cut off shorts with a mini and thought this might be the answer. It looked cute on HER. But what kind of shorts? And should they be longer or shorter than the dress? Or does it not matter? Any advice or opinions on this?
Thank you, Sherry |

Can you make an outfit the way you mean? I am having a hard time visualizing what you are after, outfit wise.... sounds interesting, love to see what the outfit in question looks like - take a pic of the ad if you can and post too...

I'm sorry I didn't save the ad, but her shorts were cutoff blue jeans just about the same length as her dress. She had knee high thin socks and maybe a sweater the same length as the dress, too. I remember thinking it made the dress look more casual since the dress was kind of frilly. It was also like a seasonal transition thing since the shorts were summery but she wore it with that thick sweater. I'll try to put together something similar and post it.
PS here's an approximation (different color scheme) pulled together from things in my closet. |

Here's another example. I'm not sure if the details are right, but kind of like this...
Thanks!

I think the answer is not unless you are under 18..... to me it looks really young and kind of sloppy unless you do it really really well..... I am all for the mini with a great top (volume or detailing, etc) but to me this looks a little off trend. I'd pair the mini with tights for winter, and a great jacket / blazer or another kind of top to make it more polished. Hope this helps and I'd be curious what others think.... am I being too narrow-minded on this one??

Chris, I think I agree with you. I tried but could not come up with a single shorts/dress combo that I felt I could really ever wear. I guess I'll save the shortie dresses for wintertime only.

this store on ebay has tons of this look - this is one of the funnier ones..but they have some that I'd wear to work or to caz around...Albeit I don't (sadly) have Chris's chic elegance (& am job hunting & wishing I did :)!! ) but I am a shortie & have ordered a bunch of stuff from this store...to hang out in..it seems to me to be a fun look for a shortie to wear...(I do have a few that are more grown up...colours, styles)...a grey & a black loosely pleated &/or ruffled short under a mini...with a looong tee or light sweater.. I like that it makes me giggle...BUT since I wear it around flat & shopping, I don't know if people laugh at me or with me... |
