While packing to move I unearthed a great khaki colored motorcycle jacket that I thought I'd lost. However it seems to have some water/dirt markings. Who do I take this jacket to to clean? Dry cleaners? Cobbler? And if it is indeed water damage, is it usually repairable?

I would find out who the best dry cleaner in town is, frankly. Leather is tough, but I would for sure give it a try. But take it to someone good (call a really nice hotel like the 4 seasons in Seattle and ask them who they use for tough dry cleaning problems - ask the concierge, they are always helpful).
If the dry cleaners can't deal with it, do try a cobbler - and I would do the same exact thing - find the best, and give it a try. Good luck - and can you put a photo up of your jacket? It sounds really cool and I'd love to see. |

Not the best picture ever (bad inconsistent lighting) but it's the best I can do at the moment. The coat is actually quite fitted zipped up, and the leather is super soft. Picked it up at an Eddie Bauer outlet store for $70 a couple years ago, marked down from $350. Made my fall!

I had a similar situation once but with a pair of Sonia Rykiel boots. I called Nordstrom (main store-Salon Shoes) they directed me to a shoe cobbler in Bothell. I cannot remember the name but they actually fixed it!! After that amazing experience I called the store back and got the name of the cleaners and tailor they use as well. It's worth a try because they are so helpful and use the best people in the trade.

Hmm I'll have to look for that cobbler in Bothell; that's where my parents live so I'm up there now and then to visit. I ended up taking the jacket to the cobbler I see to fix my shoes over in Kirkland. They do great work on shoes, so we'll find out how their jacket cleaning/restoration goes :) Should be picking it up on Tuesday, and I'm crossing my fingers!

Well, the cleaning stuff they used on the jacket turned it reddish in a few spots. So new question then: Is there any kind of leather dye I could buy and use at home to turn this jacket brown? :)
