How old does an item need to be to be considered "vintage"? I've been visiting some "vintage" shops throughout the city and am wondering how many of the items actually qualify as vintage. any thoughts?

Some people think that clothing that is 10 years old is considered vintage. But I have a hard time calling something vintage from 1998 - what I wore then doesn't seem worthy enough to have the title! In my opinion, I think something has to be at least 15 years old to be considered vintage. That would be the grunge years, and I definitely think that deserves some vintage credit.

Great topic!

It seems to me that anything more than 1 season old gets counted as vintage in consignment stores and on Ebay. In my mind, I think vintage means a piece from the early 80's or earlier..... and really means 70s, 60s and beyond. I agree with Joanna above - something that is minimalist from the 90s doesn't seem vintage to me, it just seems old.

i was told that an item needs to be at least 21 years old in order for it to be considered vintage. this lady that i do work for has a shop full of vintage items only, i guess she scopes out estate sales, she was the one who told me 21 is the number... but im sure 10 years works too, lol

I agree, only 20 years plus is ripe enough for the term VINTAGE! There's "out of season" and other forms of limbo before that...

I consider some of my Chanel and Alaia from the early to mid 90s vintage, they are typically more than 15 years old. But sometimes I doubt that too. There is a fine line between "vintage", " last season" or just plain "out of date".

i guess it depends on the style as well.

because no a days stores sell shirts like one a recently got.
They called it a "Vintage Spider Tank"

and it's brand new.

So it depends. Some people see vintage as something old.
Others see it as something that is old style.

it really depends on you. everyone thinks of it differently.

There has long been a debate on what constitutes 'vintage'. Purists would say that 'vintage' is pre-1960, and post-1960 is 'retro'. Also, when trying to date vintage clothing, collar shapes and button styles are always a good indicator of era. :D
