My husband's birthday is at the beginning of next month and I am searching for a special gift. I want to get him something he needs, like clothes and shoes. He has not worn jeans since he was a teenager (he thinks they're "hideous") and prefers skinny pants or corduroys. I have given up on the jeans, but I'm searching for some nice slacks that have a slim vintage style cut. I would also appreciate any suggestions on shoes. He likes boots that lace up to the ankle, but that aren't too dressy. I've been thinking about the Stephin Merritt boots by Bluedy, but I don't have my heart set on them. Since it's a big birthday (he's turning the big 4-0), I want to get him something that has a WOW factor, but nothing ostentatious or over the top. I've been obsessed with Rag & Bone's Runway Dodger boots by Grenson... They're on my fall wish list for a number of reasons, but namely because I think they'd go with just about every single pair of pants I own. (And could do some tempering of more pulled-together ensembles in a way jeans normally would.) Pants are eternally tough, but I just bought a pair of Jean Shop Khakis, which I've been really pleased with. They run fairly slim and fit incredibly well... Khaki in color, but cut like a jean. Best of both worlds! Have been wearing them non-stop.

Also, Michael Bastian did an incredible dark blue (though not quite navy) cord this fall that I'd suggest every guy run out to buy--seriously, they're that great.

You also may want to check out John Varvatos Boot collection they have some great ones this fall, and his classic Pinwhale cords are almost always a hit.
