Today's WWD has a piece about Calvin Klein opening up e-commerce for the first time as a part of its retail expansion. It also mentions that a number of brands, including Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Prada, YSL, and Stella McCartney all have e-tail options on their sites, which got me thinking---how many people actually prefer shopping online?
I love the ease of shopping online, and personally use it to keep myself well stocked in basics--J. Crew is a site I probably visit a bit too often. However, I usually have bit more trepidation when looking at pieces I consider more of an investment. What do you guys think? |

i think that more people are finding less time to go out and shop in stores these days and are turning to the internet. since my job requires me to do both, i usually shop for myself bits at a time whatever comes my way and often without trying anything on since i'm always in a hurry in stores or just buying something quickly online when i'm working. i find that most of my clients are open to both options. online works out great especially if you are in search of something specific. you don't have to spend a day driving around looking for it, much more efficient with your time. sometimes, certain items are only available online so you get more options to choose from. l agree with justin about basics. so much easier online. i'm a sucker for J.Crew's site as well. there is always something i need for myself or my husband. as for the more expensive items online, i usually don't hesitate if the return policy is easy. i'm actually more willing to purchase those online since i can try it on at home with my own shoes, etc and figure out if i will really wear it and just ship it back if it's not right for me.

I love shopping online - it gets me away from the sales environment which can lead me to purchases I later regret. Plus, as Gena said above, I can try it on in my home, with my shoes and accessories - and decide then. Shopbop has great return policies, that is why I buy so much there.

I prefer in-store shopping for high ticket items, mostly because I like the overall shopping experience. I also like to feel fabrics and look at the quality of what I'm purchasing, especially if it's a high ticket item. I am also really impatient when it comes to shipping--I want it now! If something I order online doesn't fit, I don't like the hassle of packing it back up, heading to the post office, and then paying for shipping. There are certain times when I do enjoy purchasing items online. For example, Intermix online always has great shoe sales. I'll give in to e-commerce for Chloe wedges any day! Online shopping can also be good for trendy "of-the-moment" pieces. I don't mind spending $60 on some cute ethnic summer sandals from Urban Outfitters online because I know I'll wear them for a few months and then move on. It doesn't require much thought.

i just saw that miss sixty is doing an online store too
biggest problem for me is I love to shop online, buy all the sizes available, and then return the ones that don't fit - but the stores will no longer let you return in store - you have to mail it back this means don't throw out anything that comes in the box - seriouslyl |

I love to shop online. I like knowing that the item I want in the size I need is available to me now or not. I've grown tired of going to stores where I have to flag down someone for help or have to ask for a size "from the back." The only disadvantage is I've found that many items aren't always available online, so going out once in a while is a necessity.
I'm a sucker for mail so I still like the "surprise" of finding a box at my door when I get home and tearing through the tissue paper to see which item has arrived. The biggest downside is making sure the fit is right and the hassle of sending it back, but sometimes the convenience is worth it. A trip to a high-end shop is a joy in itself when you have the time and the money to peruse at your leisure and enjoy the thrill of the hunt for a new fantastic item. |

I love shopping online. Not just because I am a online clothing merchant. I don't see any advantages to shop retail. I think we can get better deals, it is so much more easier and purchases are delivered to your door. No wasting gas, fighting for parking and I don't need to hassle with pushy sales people.

Dear everyone,
I am so glad I found this post! I'm doing survey for my master's dissertation to find out consumer's perception of online luxury store atmosphere, specifically luxury fashion and accessories. For the sake of St. Online Shopping, could you please fill in my questionnaire? I am running out of time and I need 100 respondents! It takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. All answers will be kept confidential. Link http://edu.surveygizmo.com/s3/989655/Luxur...mosphere-online Thank you so so so so so much in advance! I will really appreciate it! |

My answer is -- both are good and bad in their own ways.
I would LOVE shopping in stores if they had my size in everything. I often end up buying things on line after seeing them in store, just to get my size. But it's great to see the clothes in person. Online shopping is great because a lot of retailers have a lot more stuff on the website than in store. But sizes are so inconsistant that I order two sizes -- inconvenient! |

I have run a online vintage clothing store called BackInStyle.com for the past 12 years, and have definitely seen an increase in online shopping. I think people like shopping from the comfort of their own home, when it is convenient for them. No traffic, no parking, no pushy sales people, no super skinny 6 feet tall other shoppers making you feel self conscious, or being nosy about what you pick. Just you and your computer (and maybe even a glass of wine). And when the clothing arrives, you can try it on in the privacy of your own home, and decide if it works with your wardrobe, if it looks good on you, if you husband likes it, etc. No pressure. It is also easier to compare products and search many different stores, which is very important when you are vintage shopping.
